Manchester's Top Landmarks, Manchester, England (A)
"Although there has been a parish church building on this site since the late Anglo Saxon or Early Norman period, the cathedral we see today looks nothing like the building that would have stood there all those years ago. The cathedral has been modified over the years after structural damage caused by the Civil War, damage caused by a German bomb during the Manchester Blitz in the second World War and further damage caused by the IRA bomb of 1996. In the thirteenth century a stone parish church was constructed in the parish that was to become Manchester, serving people in a 60 mile radius."

"As industrial as the city may be, even Manchester needs a few beautiful churches. Possibly the most impressive of them all is Manchester Cathedral. Over five hundred years old, the building is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside."

5 Historic Buildings in Liverpool, England
"Until the erection of today’s popular 1960s building, Roman Catholics in Liverpool had no true cathedral in which to worship. Edward Welby Pugin, son of the more famous Augustus, was commissioned to design a cathedral in 1853 but only part of it was built, which served as a parish church until it was demolished in the 1980s. After the Anglican cathedral began to rise at one end of Hope Street in 1904, Sir Edwin Lutyens was commissioned to outdo Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s design at a new site at the other end of the same street."

5 Historic Buildings in Liverpool, England
"One of Europe’s finest Neoclassical buildings, St. George’s Hall is a monument to the wealth and civic aspirations of a great commercial city in the 19th century. Liverpool continued to thrive and expand in this period, despite its trade in enslaved people having been ended in 1807, yet its citizens were increasingly aware that it was lagging behind in cultural matters. A competition was held in 1839 for a public hall for meetings, concerts, and dinners, and it was won by 25-year-old Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, who shortly afterward won a separate competition for the new courts of law."

"The historic Edinburgh Castle pub has been brought back to life by the team behind Cottonopolis. The Victorian pub, which dates back to 1811, is the ideal local for the residents of Ancoats – a ‘proper boozer with a proper pint’. The downstairs is split into two areas, with a small bar in the front of the building and a cosy saloon bar in the back, complete with mirrored walls, an antique coat of arms and a framed old map of Ancoats nodding to the area's heritage."
