"Manchester is home to two world class Art Galleries - The Manchester Art Gallery in town and the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Road, by the university. There's also the recently redeveloped and reopened Gallery of Costume in Platt Fields Park - which you'll pass most days on your commute from Fallowfield to the Uni. All of the galleries house impressive permanent collections (which are free) and regular special exhibitons (which aren't)."

"One of five Imperial War Museums in the UK, Manchester’s addition to the repertoire is located in Media City. The striking aluminium-clad building houses a timeline of Britain’s conflicts since the First World War, drawing on different elements of war such as the involvement of women and the impact of science and technology on how wars are fought. Alongside the permanent exhibits are plenty of films and photographs showcasing what life was like during these conflicts.Imperial War Museum | © the yes man / Flickr"

"On Deansgate in Manchester is the John Rylands Library, a late-19th century Victorian building in a Gothic style. What’s so different about this library is that it looks a lot more like a cathedral than a place for housing books. It is considered by many as Manchester’s most beautiful building and houses some of the earliest books ever printed."

"An art gallery at the Albert Docks that we enjoy spending short amounts of time at, whilst admiring the modern and contemporary artwork displayed. This wonderful free thing to do in Liverpool with kids only charges for special exhibitions. Our kids love using the free rocket activity backpacks, we also love the kid’s free-play space where they have played for a long time creating patterns, dressing up and generally being a little louder than in the rest of the gallery!"

Top 10 arts venues in Liverpool
"With an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art from the 13th century to the present day, this grand gallery is still one of Liverpool's best tourist attractions. Part of a strip of much-loved public buildings on William Brown Street (including the Central Library, St George's Hall and World Museum), it's a great place to spend an afternoon. Lose yourself in the Victorian galleries lined with traditional wallpapers, 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, John Moores Painting Prize winners – including Hockney's Peter Getting Out Of Nick's Pool – and (our favourite) the stunning white sculpture room on the ground floor."

"\In 1924, upmarket department store Hendersons opened on Church Street where you’ll now find H&M. The Hendersons store was known as a real special occasion shop, renowned for intimidating Beauty Counter ladies who also sold chocolates!. The store went on to be so successful, it sold to Harrods in 1948, but Liverpool’s branch of Hendersons will always be linked to tragedy after the worst fire damage seen in the city since The Blitz, took hold of the building in June 1960, bringing the city centre to a standstill and resulting in 11 people losing their lives."
